The Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) - or NOAA Research - provides the research foundation for understanding the complex systems that support our planet. Working in partnership with other organizational units of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a bureau of the Department of Commerce, NOAA Research enables better forecasts, earlier warnings for natural disasters, and a greater understanding of the Earth. Our role is to provide unbiased science to better manage the environment, nationally, and globally.
This Physical Scientist position is located in the Ocean Acidification Program. As such, you will be responsible for ocean acidification communications and outreach.
Position: Term--with option to extend after 2 years and
the position can be located EITHER in Silver Spring OR Charleston, SC at the Hollings Marine Lab.

This position is that of a Physical Scientist in the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Silver Spring, MD or Charleston, SC. In this capacity, you will:
Serve as the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the cross matrix Ocean Acidification Program.
Maintain and enhance the agency's website and social media outreach program.
Develop written and presentation outreach materials for broad and specific audiences.
Lead a broad, national stakeholder ocean acidification communications working group.
Other duties as assigned by the agency Director.

This position has a basic education requirement. You must possess one of the following in order to be found qualified:
A. A degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
B. A combination of education and experience. The education is equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In order to be qualified for the GS-11 level, you must possess one of the following:
A. One year of experience, equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service, with experience
equivalent to the ZP-2 or GS-09 level in the Federal service, with experience including the following:
1.) Oversee ocean acidification science and research communication, 2) design and maintain scientific program website using DotNetNuke and mapping software; 3.) Organize and lead communications experts on a national basis in development of ocean acidification-specific messages; and 4.) Present, and organize communication workshops, using scientific webinars and GoTo Meeting Software specifically focused on ocean acidification.
B. A PhD or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a field of physical science, engineering, or mathematics.
C. A combination of experience, as described above, and graduate level education, as described above, that when combined, equals at least 100% of the total requirement. (To compute, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond two years by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.)
