The position of Microbiologist falls under the 0403 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-12/13, you must meet the following:
Basic Requirements Possess a degree in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent OR possess a combination of education and experience which includes, courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. NOTE:

Minimum Qualifications For Microbiologist, GS-12 Possess at least (1) one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service that includes applying knowledge of the principles and practices of microbiology methods and study designs for the review and analysis of scientific data; and providing analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations on regulatory and laboratory operations in the microbiology field. Minimum Qualifications For Microbiologist, GS-13. Possess at least (1) one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service that includes applying knowledge of the principles and practices of microbiology methods and study designs for the review and analysis of scientific data; providing analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations on regulatory and laboratory operations in the microbiology field; and providing recommendations to modifying experiment conditions as warranted. Specialized Experience. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
